BluSeed Studios is pleased to announce the winners of their third annual juried art competition, “Abstraction,” which opened on January 30th. Works in the abstract in a variety of media were submitted by regional artists as well as submissions from throughout New York and ten other states including as far away as Illinois and Colorado. Works to be exhibited were selected by this year’s jurors, Wah Wing Chan and Ann McCall of Montreal. McCall stated that she and Wing, “found the works wonderfully varied and of excellent quality.”
Juror Wah Wing Chan holds two BFA degrees from Concordia University, one in Studio Arts and a second in printmaking. Since 2000, he has been a member of Atelier Circulaire, a printmaking studio in the Montreal’s Mile End district. His work has been shown in extensively in Montreal and has been featured in art journals and shown internationally, most recently in Portugal and Turkey. Chan’s artworks can be found in private and public collections in Canada, China, India, Portugal, Korea, and Switzerland.
Jurror Ann McCall has been working professionally as a printmaker and painter since 1975. She received her BA from McGill University in 1964 and a BFA from Concordia University in 1977. Her work has been presented in over 55 solo exhibitions and in more than 250 group exhibitions in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In 1981 Ann McCall was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and was Vice-President from 2007-10 and President from 2010-12. Her works can be found in many public, private, University and Corporate Collections.
A total of fifty-eight works are on exhibition at BluSeed Studios, and five were awarded prizes at the opening reception on Friday, January 30th; Best in Show, First Place, two Honorable Mentions, and a People’s Choice award.
Best in Show went to Christine Meyer of Devon, PA for her oil and cold wax painting, “Greek Sunset.” First Place was awarded to Jason Galligan-Baldwin of Calais, VT for his macro photograph titled, “Olive.” Honorable Mentions were awarded to Gilles Lamarche of Ausable Forks, NY for his acrylic on canvas work, “Untitled 1,” and Ronnie Cramer of Denver, CO for his watercolor, “Juno.”
The “Peoples’ Choice Award” was voted on by attendees of the opening reception on January 30th. Artist, Lee Ann Sporn was the favorite with her acrylic on canvas work titled, “Barnum Brook.”
“Abstraction” will run through February 28, 2015. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 1pm – 5pm, and Saturday, noon to 5pm, or by appointment.
