Why Take This Workshop?

The objective of this workshop is to share Orff lessons with other teaching professionals or those seeking new ways to listen.

What is the Orff Process? Releasing creativity that extends far beyond the music classroom, Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman conceived an approach to building musicianship in every learner through the integration of music, movement, speech, and drama.

There will also be a visual and culinary component integrated into this workshop.  Attendees will create their own song book and for those opting to add on for more than the afternoon will be treated to a culinary delight that aligns with the Orff methods.  Join in and open yourself up to a discovery which expands your comfort zone and increases confidence and self-esteem. After you complete this retreat you will be able to show your students or colleagues how  ideas can fit together and how they pull apart, enabling them to understand how things work and inspiring them to begin their creative journey with enthusiasm!

Not a teacher?  Not a problem!

You do not have to be a musician or know how to sing to appreciate this learning technique. There is more to discover from how the creative arts can stimulate new ideas, provide a framework for practical solutions and be done in a way that can energize you and your passion! By integrating the full breadth of the arts from visual to culinary, crafts and the healing arts, this retreat will rejuvenate your creative energy!

This is a family friendly professional development program! Bring your family or come by yourself and earn CTLE credits while on vacation!

BluSeed Studios, “Creative Classrooms Project” and the Lake Clear Lodge & Retreat have partnered to develop a series of participant driven workshops entitled “Creative Learning Retreats.” This will not be a standard workshop in a classroom setting. Participants will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of settings including an iconic Adirondack arts center, a Great Camp lodge and nature-based sites. A creative team of teaching professionals, creative artists from performing to culinary, will be featured presenters. Unique audience driven workshops include dramatizations, demonstrations, interactive creative problem solving and fun culinary experiences utilizing food as an educational tool.

Workshop Leaders:

Tom Hemans has been a professional music educator at Ballston Spa Central School District for fifteen years–serving as Elementary Music and Choral Director, Middle School & High School Choral Director and GM Teacher for Ballston Spa. Mr. Hemans has used the Orff Schulwerk process in his classroom extensively for the past 15 years and has completed Orff Schulwerk levels I &II.  He recently wrote and produced an Orff Musical titled “The Bakers Dozen”.
The beauty of the Orff Schulwerk process is that can be easily learned by musicians with no prior experience or those with with no musical skills.
Orff believed that children learn music like language–they need to experience the sounds, pitches, rhythms, and melodies before they learn to read music.
Attendees will experience the teaching process in the same way the students are taught in their music class. Songs are built using Ostinato’s repeated patterns that are then layered. Echo singing is used to teach melodies while students learn to read lyrics. Once textures are established, form and structure are used to create contrasting texture.
We will provide instruments for all attendees, however this lesson can be taught with a minimum number of xylophones, recorders or other rhythm instruments when bringing it back to your classroom. Instructional materials, including assessment and reflection strategies, will be provided later in the lesson to be shared with your colleagues back home.
Cathy Hohmeyer, Executive Chef/Co-owner and Energist/Health Coach/Nutritionist: Cathy works with clients in person at The Lodge and by phone from around the globe. Cathy started her professional career in the schools as an Occupational Therapist (OTR).  She states, “All of us are creative and often this part of us is put in the background and we are left without one of our most powerful tools – our imagination and creativity. Unleashing this can be fun, integrating food with art can offer a new approach and re-energize us; that’s the purpose of these Creative Learning Retreats.”
Ernest Hohmeyer, co-owner of The Lake Clear Lodge, certified in Small Business Development and awarded US Small Business Entrepreneurship of the Year Award, Craft Beer Consultant:  The Lake Clear Lodge & Retreat (LCL&R) specializes in “Adirondack Discovery” experiences focusing on nature-based wellness and heritage experiences.
