“Let’s Play with Pulp” Children’s Papermaking Workshop

July 18, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Before paper was made from trees, it was made from old rags.  In this special papermaking workshop, children will learn the nearly 2,000 year-old tradition of making paper by hand!  Visiting Artist Margaret Mahan of Peace Paper Project will lead this workshop, inviting young participants to get pulpy making small and huge sheets of paper from clothes, recycled material, flowers, and even Monopoly money!

About the process: Papermaking is a wet process, so participants are encouraged to wear footwear and clothing that they don’t mind getting a little messy but don’t worry, paper pulp does not stain.

About the paper: Participants will be able to keep all of the paper they make.  Once the paper is pressed and has had time to dry, Margaret will mail it to its makers.

About Margaret Mahan: Margaret co-directs the international hand papermaking organization Peace Paper Project. She has facilitated workshops for people of all ages, and loves making paper out of wild and interesting materials. In 2010, she received her BA in English from Saint Michael’s College, and before that she was a counselor at a nature day camp in her home state of Rhode Island.  To learn more about Peace Paper Project, please visit www.peacepaperproject.org.
