The Ouluska Pass Chamber Music Group is back after an eight-year absence to continue their 15th season in Saranac Lake including a presentation titled “Sight and Sound”. On Thursday, August 17th at 7pm, the musicians will be combining chamber music, inspired by paintings by the late Italo Clemente, which are now on exhibit at BluSeed Studios. Several masterworks were selected then short pieces of music were paired with the artwork, it is up to the audience to then guess which painting goes with the musical movement! Prior to the concert and during intermission the audience will have time to look at the selected works and try to guess which music goes with which painting!
Gregor Kitzis, founder of Ouluska Pass states, “after the intermission we play the first piece again and then ask for a show of hands for who thinks the piece goes with painting number one, then we simply ask, “Why?” The responses are timid at first but that’s okay. Then we ask for a show of hands for painting number two and ask, “Why?” Once they see their neighbors chiming in with regular opinions that you don’t have to have gone to art school to have then they start chiming in, too. Frequently someone in the audience says something we hadn’t thought of and we all explore the relationship between painting and music together. Along the way we reveal what our opinions are, and sometimes we don’t even agree with each other, which shows the audience that there is no right or wrong answer and that music and art can and should mean something different to everybody. This demystifies the arts, personalizes the artists and makes regular people, friends and neighbors, realize that the arts aren’t only for the elites but for everybody”.
Fresh from a busy year of concerts at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center plus tours and recordings seemingly all over the place the members of Ouluska Pass finally come back together for their favorite part of the summer, getting to play great chamber music in the Adirondacks. The group consists of founding member, violinist, violist, composer and musical saw player Gregor Kitzis, Gregor’s wife and new member flutist Laura Thompson, previous Ouluska Pass member cellist Kate Dillingham Saranac Lake resident violinist Elaine Dewar and violist Denise Cridge.
Mr. Kitzis continues,” The musicians will speak with the audience before each piece to share with you what’s unique about the music and what to listen for to enjoy it that much more. The idea is to turn the composers into people and the performers into friends”.
Everyone is invited to meet the musicians after the concert to share a drink and talk about the concert or anything else you have in mind. For additional questions, email Gregor@gregorkitzis.com for a prompt reply. Hope to see you there!
